RED FORT BRIEF INFORMATION



Red Fort (Laal killa) is a prominent monument in the city of Delhi in India and has some major facts associated with it. Red Fort is a major tourist place for people who love to visit India from across the globe. It is made of red stone and marble on the right bank of Yamuna river. Many people often visit this magnificent fort but only a few of them know the facts it shares.

Red Fort was the main residence of Mughal dynasty. At present every year on 15th August ( India's Independence Day), the prime minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and it was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2007.


A brief history of Red Fort


⏩ Mughal Emperor Shahjahan commissioned the construction of Red Fort in 1639 and it took almost 10 years for the completion.

In 1730 Persian ruler Nadir Shah, defeated the Mughal army and captured the Red Fort.

In 1760, Mughals then signed a treaty with Marathas and the Marathas promised to protect the Fort But soon Ahmad Shah Durrani attacked and defeated the Marathas and took over the fort.

In 1788 the Marathas with all their strength recaptured the fort and ruled for more than 20 years until the British forces defeated them in the  second Anglo Maratha war ( 1803)

⏩  The Britisher either destroyed all the furniture or shipped them to England. Moreover, they looted all the valuables from the fort

⏩  After independence, the Indian Army controlled the major part of the Fort and later handed it to the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI).


FACTS ABOUT RED FORT

1. Britishers Destroyed and looted the property of red fort and took away all the valuables inside and sold them in England. It is quite disturbing but is true.

2. Red Fort has two gates - Lahore gate and Delhi gate. The Lahore gate is the main entrance to the Red Fort and is named so because of its orientation towards Lahore city ( Pakistan). The Delhi gate of Red Fort has two elephants constructed on both sides which face towards each other.

3. Red Fort had a Naubat Khana ( nakkar khana). It was the drum house and music was played daily at the scheduled time.

4. In 2002 the Red Fort was attacked by 6 Lashkar-e-Taiba members

5. The original name of the Red Fort was " Qila-e-Mubarak" which means " The blessed fort". 

6. Do you know the name of the architects who made this beautiful fort? They were - Ustad Hamid and Ustad Ahmad and it literally took 10 years for the completion of the Red Fort.

7. The World's largest diamond i.e "Kohinoor" diamond was part of Shah Jahan's throne (diwan-i-khas).

8. The Red Fort was actually white in colour at the time when it was built by Emperor Shahjahan but later the colour was changed to Red at the command of Britishers

9. There is also a museum of "blood paintings" which depicts the stories of 20th-century martyrs of India.
